December Art Notes

We have been working hard in the art room the past month!  Our current classes include 6th Core Art, 8th Core Art, 3D Sculpture, and (new to me) Food Experience.

6th Core Art:
We will have finished both Ancient Greece and Rome before break.  6th grade artists will have created their own Greek pottery, complete with a myth, and a clay portrait bust before break.  In January we will be studying the Renaissance, as well as some various types of Architecutre that begin during this time.

3D Sculpture:
Sculptors worked with clay and now are learning the amazing 3D effects you can do with just paper.  Look for these 3D paper animals after break!

8th Core Art:
Before break, 8th grade students will have finished their Pop Art relief sculptures, and wrapped up their unit on Abstract Expressionism.  They will have chosen an emotion, and learned various painting techniques to help them express that emotion—with colors, shapes, and lines only!  After break, we will start on our 20th century architecture unit, complete with using Google Sketchup to create our dream houses!

Food Experience:
All students have passed their safety tests, which means they have the green light to start cooking!  We will be learning about each of the 5 food groups, and creating recipes that feature these.  Students have chosen a recipe starring a fruit, vegetable, grain, protein, dairy, (and a dessert), and will be cooking these up as the weeks go on!  I’m looking forward to seeing (and tasting) what they come up with this block!
If you are a parent of a child in Food Experience, make sure they have told you about their cooking homework!  You have a night off from cooking each week!  If you have questions please let me know.

Happy Fall!

Happy Fall!  Time is flying around here in the Art room and we've been busy busy busy!

Here's what we've been up to:
*Middle School
  • 8th Grade Core Art has been learning all about Modern Art!  We are now diving into 20th cenutry architecture, and learning our way around Google Sketchup.
  • 6th Grade 3D Sculpture:  Our 3D artists have created postcards and wire trees.  When they return from outdoor lab we will be using plaster to make some masks!
*Elementary
  • Kindergarten artists are now color experts!  Check out their flower color wheels in the hallway!
  • 1st graders just finished being architects and designing their own buildings with geometric shapes.
  • 2nd graders have been busy creating realistic Fall leaves, and are now making story quilts a la Faith Ringgold.
  • 3rd Grade=3D.  3rd graders learned all about 3D shapes, and 3D shading.  We are now moving on to Native American art!
  • 4th Grade started off the year with African Art and creating their own Adinkra stamps.  They will be starting Art of China next time and creating clay dragons!
  • 5th Grade has their "calacas" (skulls) bright and ready for Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) held in November!  We studied the history behind this Mexican holiday and how it relates to their unit on Aztecs and Mayans.
Thanks for stopping by!
