Winter in the Art Room

Middle school students have been busy in the art room this winter!

6th Core Knowledge is studying Ancient Rome after Ancient Greece.  We are making our own Roman mosaic animals.  We will move onto the Renaissance next and learn about perspective.

8th grade Graphic Designers have created their own logo and shoe designs, and are now beginning to learn various aspects of Adobe Photoshop.  We will be doing some fun projects with Photoshop that involve advertisements for their shoes, and a collaboration project with some of our WWA elementary wildcats!  Look for those to come.

6th grade Mixed Media students are exploring all different types of materials with their fractured self portraits.  We will be moving on to clay looms next!

Have a great winter!

Happy Fall from the Art Room!

We are busy creating around here!  Here's what's happening:

Middle School:
*7th Core has been studying Impressionism and creating their own Impressionist landscape paintings.  They've been doing exercises in color mixing and learning how to create realistic color and light in their paintings.
*8th Core has been studying Pop Art and creating Pop Art relief sculptures in the style of Andy Warhol.  They are moving on to Abstract Expressionism next, and will be learning how to express a mood, feeling, or emotion without using words or recognizable images.
*Mixed Media has finished their clay relief sculptures and are now creating a mixed media word design.  They've learned about a variety of materials and are combining them to create a final product.

Elementary:
*Kindergarten:  They are now color experts on Primary, Secondary, Warm, and Cool colors.  We've been creating projects based on these color teams.  We are moving on to creating patterns, and are making patterned pumpkins this fall.
*1st Grade:  They have learned about Ancient Egypt and created their own clay sarcophagus.  We are moving on to realistic observational drawing, and using pumpkins to draw our fall still life.
*2nd Grade:  They have finished their realistic pastel fall leaves and are studying the Art of Japan.  We made Japanese fans and are now creating our clay Koi fish.
*3rd Grade:  They have completed a unit on observational drawing, light and shadow, and 3D shapes and created a still life.  We are going to be studying Native American art--especially baskets--and making our own basket weaving before heading to Ancient Rome!
*4th Grade:  We finished studying the art of Africa by making Safari Silhouettes and African clay water pots.  They were introduced to the Art of China and are creating their own watercolor dragons.

Enjoy the new clay creations pieces in the display case from our 7th grade artists!

2014 WWA Art Show!

Art Show Success!

Thank you to all that who attended our first annual Family Art Night and Reception for the 2014 Art Show.  It was a tremendous turn out, and such a great time to see everyone coming together to view the hard work and talent from our K-8 artists; as well create something of their own!  Also, thank you for your patience as I figure out how much food to order—we will definitely have more for next year!  I wanted to thank our amazing volunteers as well, who helped mount work, hang work, label work, sew, bring supplies, work at the event, and more.  It was great working with you and I truly appreciate all your support!  Please note that the show will be taken down this week and artwork will be returned in the upcoming weeks.  I am also busy tallying all the votes for our People’s Choice Awards, and hope to have those announced next week.  Congratulations again to all our K-8 artists, and thank you again for your support of our art program.

You’re Invited!
Our WWA 2014 Art Show is being held Thursday, April 10th through Thursday, April 17th on the gym stage.  This year, we have many new and exciting additions to the show!  We are having a Family Art Night and Reception on the opening date, April 10th, from 3:30-6pm.  It will be held in the gym and include two art projects you can make with your friends and family, snacks, and of course a stage full of K-8 artwork to view!  Also, along with the individual artworks, you will see a collaborative project from all K-5 grades, and one from our World Arts middle school class.  And finally, this year there will be the “People’s Choice Awards”, which will award the top 3 voted artworks in K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 grade level categories.  Students will be voting with their own classes, but by attending the Family Art Night and Reception, they will receive an extra vote.  Anyone who attends this evening will be able to vote as well.  I look forward to seeing you all there and hope you will join us in celebrating the accomplishments of all our artists!  Please see the invitation for more information, or contact Mrs. Fingland.

Winter in the Art Room

Winter is here and we are working it into our artwork throughout grade levels!

Kindergarten-  We discussed realistic art and created polar bears with shaving cream.  We also learned out to make patterns to put as a background on our polar bears.

1st grade-We created snowy owls and learned some different painting techniques, as well as how to draw owls.

2nd grade-These artists read the book 'Snowmen at Night' and learned all about light and shadow.  We then created 3D shaded snowmen, who were doing all sorts of fun things at night--playing football, singing, sledding and more!

3rd grade-We finished talking about Ancient Rome and created our clay shields.  We are learning about Native Americans next!

4th grade-Fourth grade is finishing their unit on Medieval times by making their illuminated letters and metal tooling castles.

5th grade-These students are finishing their self portraits and learning about the Renaissance.  We are going to learn about American artist Georgia O'Keefe next.

6/7th Grade Art Around the World:  These students have "traveled" to Asia and created their own lanterns, and now just finished their project involving African Kente cloth.  They dyed their own fabrics, used Ashanti symbols/their own symbols to carve stamps, then printed their stamps on their cloth.  We are headed to Central America next where we will look at the art of Mexico.

*BIG NEWS:  WWA 2014 Art Show is coming SOON!  Please look for more details in the March Wildcat Weekly newsletters, and in Thursday folders.  The show is set to kick off on Thursday, April 10th with a Family Art Night/Reception to be held in the gym from 3:30-6pm.  We will have snacks and art projects provided for you so come enjoy a creative night and view all the wonderful K-8 artwork!  The show will remain on the stage from April 10-April 17th, so if you can't make it that night join us one of those days while school is open.
